Why a Backpack Means So Much
The Heart Behind Our Back-to-School Drive
Back-to-school season brings excitement for many families—fresh pencils, clean notebooks, and the promise of a new beginning. But for the single mothers we serve at Sister Angel Foundation for Education, it often brings something else: stress.
These women are working tirelessly—raising children, attending college, and doing their best to make ends meet. Month after month, many of them juggle multiple jobs, long commutes, and full course loads just to keep their dreams alive. When school supply lists start circulating, the excitement of a new school year can quickly turn into anxiety about yet another expense.
That’s where our Back-to-School Drive comes in.
We provide backpacks and school supplies for the children of the mothers we serve—because we believe every child deserves to start the school year feeling confident, prepared, and excited. And we believe every mother deserves to feel proud knowing she was able to provide that for her child, even in the face of hardship.
But this event is more than just giving away supplies. It’s about planting seeds.
Many of the children who attend our Back-to-School event do so on the same community college campuses where their mothers attend school. They walk the same hallways, visit the same student centers, and feel the energy of a place where futures are being built. For many, it’s their first time on a college campus—and we hope it won’t be their last.
It becomes a happy memory. A symbol. A moment where they can say, “My mom goes to college—and one day, I can too.”
When a child sees their mother pursuing an education, it changes the way they see the world—and their place in it. Studies show that children of educated mothers do better in school and in life. That’s why our Back-to-School Drive isn’t just about paper and pencils. It’s about hope, legacy, and breaking cycles of poverty—one backpack at a time.
Many of our partner community colleges do an amazing job of supporting student parents with resources and supplies. But due to state funding restrictions, they often can’t use those funds to purchase supplies for students’ children—even though those children are deeply impacted by their mother’s success.
That’s where we step in—to fill the gap with compassion.
Let’s make this school year amazing.
Let’s send kids back to school with excitement in their hearts.
Let’s help mothers feel empowered and proud.
Let’s build a future—together.
Donate. Volunteer. Spread the word.
